Anbyon County of Kangwon Province is famous in the DPRK as a region where persimmon trees grow well. And Chonsam-ri is the most famous in the county.
The appearance of the area changed beyond recognition. The transformation of the area is associated with the benevolent care of the great leader Comrade Kim Il Sung . One day in June 1959 he visited the then Chonsam Agricultural Cooperative in the county. That day he chatted with an old inhabitant named O Kyong Bong.
Hearing from him that the cooperative was still in economic difficulties, he was silent for a while before he asked him about the livelihood of his family.
His family lived there for several generations. Before Korea’s liberation on August 15, 1945 his family had to give up their small cottage for debt and wander about. But after Comrade Kim Il Sung liberated the country and ensured that land was distributed among peasants, O was elected as a member of the local rural committee and worked with all sincerity. He gathered good harvests in the land given to him and donated scores of straw bags of rice to the country. During the Fatherland Liberation War (June 25, 1950-July 27, 1953) he had his three sons serve the army and himself joined the guerrilla warfare with his daughters-in-law. After the war he did his part in forming an agricultural cooperative in his locality.
After hearing him out, Comrade Kim Il Sung called him a patriotic and praiseworthy farmer and a pacesetter in socialist construction.
Then he said that additional income was needed to improve the living standards of the local peasants and asked the old man if he had got any good idea.
The old man replied that every family in his locality grew persimmon trees for long.
After casting his eyes at a nearby young persimmon tree, Comrade Kim Il Sung indicated detailed ways for increasing cash income of peasants by planting a lot of persimmon trees around houses as well as on ridges or low hills.
True to his instruction, O and other local farmers later planted persimmon trees in various places of the village, which gave them much income every year and did a great deal to improving the farm’s economy.
Later Comrade Kim Il Sung inquired after his health on several occasions, and invited him to celebrations held in Pyongyang.
In October 1976 he visited the village again. Looking round rows of heavily-laden persimmon trees on a hill, he recollected O.
The village still conveys the story of Comrade Kim Il Sung ’s warm affection for the people.
