Gourd-shaped pots unearthed in Misong-ri, Uiju County, North Phyongan Province, are typical relics dating back to Ancient Joson that had existed between the early 30th century BC and 108 BC.
Most of the pots, 20 or so centimetres high, were made of soft clay like mud, and some of them were made with clay mixed with fine sand.
The pots vary in shape, some long- or short-necked, some somewhat round or longish and others handled or not.
Some have one or two pairs of handles in their waist part, which resemble lips, rings and knobs.
Some pots are decorated with patterns on the neck, body or the whole surface.
They have a smoothly polished surface and are black in colour with a very thin wall.
As a valuable showcase for the creativity and culture of the contemporaries, the gourd-shaped pots are preserved in the Korean Central History Museum and serve as important relics for studying the ancient culture.
