A group of scientists at the Academy of Agricultural Science has developed a new biodegradable paper which proves effective in grain production.
The paper is made of rice or reed straws and produced at the local factory, so it requires low cost.
One ton of the paper is enough to cover three hectares of crop fields. After 60-75 days the paper is dissolved by soil microorganisms. The materials coming out of the dissolving process do not give rise to soil contamination and serve as a good organic matter and soil improver.
The growth of weeds is held back under the weight of the paper, and it is therefore unnecessary to remove weeds.
Last year the Oryong Farm in Mundok County, South Phyongan Province applied the method of coating soil surface by means of the biodegradable paper.
“After we adopted the new method, we could save manpower, fertilizer and agricultural chemicals a lot and effectively minimize the effect from the disastrous abnormal climate,” said the local farmers.
One of the advantages of the method is that it prevents soil erosion by spring rain and the evaporation of aqueous elements in soil and helps maintain a certain degree of humidity so that crops can grow under the long-lasting drought.
It keeps soil safe from high temperature and cold weather as it functions just like an umbrella against sunshine when temperature rises and like a covering when temperature drops.
Accordingly, the growth of crops was at least ten days earlier than that in ordinary fields, and the number of grains per ear and the weight per 1 000 grains were also incomparably higher.
Last year the farm increased grain production by over one ton per hectare in the fields covered with the paper.
