The DPRK abounds in mineral water resources, especially hot springs.
Hot springs effective in improving health and medical treatment are widely distributed across the country from the northern highlands like the Mt Paektu area to lowlands.
With the temperature ranging from 20 to 100℃, they are a rich source of minerals including calcium ion, magnesium ion, chlorine ion, hydrocarbonate ion, radon and hydrogen sulfide.
According to old documents, Korean ancestors promoted their health and treated diseases by soaking their body in hot spring or an artificially-made pool for a certain time.
These hot springs were so famous for their therapeutic efficacy that even foreigners applied for using them.
This tells that the Korean people have created and developed fine and unique hot spring culture for a long time by using hot springs for medical treatment.
Referring to the Onpho hot spring in Kyongsong County, North Hamgyong Province, an old document says that there was a hot spring there about 500 years ago and many people used it.
Phyongnam (Ryonggang) hot spring in Onchon County Township in Nampho Municipality is one of the hot springs with the largest amount of minerals at home and abroad. Besides, Hwangjin hot spring in North Hamgyong Province, Songchon and Yangdok hot springs in South Phyongan Province, Unsan hot spring in North Phyongan Province and Wonhung hot spring in Jagang Province have a long history and high therapeutic efficacy.
There are also folk tales about hot springs.
Once upon a time, a man climbed a mountain to gather firewood in winter and came across an arrowroot which got its flowers in full bloom untimely. Amazed, he followed the arrowroot tendrils to reach a valley where he found a hot spring gushing out. Afterwards, people named the hot spring Kalsan after the mountain and widely used it.
Today the abundant hot spring resources are contributing to promoting the people’s health.
