Since ancient times, the Korean people have created and carried on several customs suited to seasonal characteristics of April.
The month has Chongmyong and Kogu , two of the 24 seasonal subdivisions by the lunar calendar.
Chongmyong, which means the beginning of clear spring weather, falls on April 5 or 6.
On the occasion, people repaired the houses like tending the roofs and fences to remove the traces of winter and visited their ancestors’ graves to pay tribute. They enjoyed the day eating several traditional dishes.
Kogu , which means the start of raining helpful for crop growing, falls on April 20 or 21.
The farmers were busy sowing seeds of crops like rice, foxtail millet, sweet potato and sesame. They also planted pumpkin, lettuce, eggplant and leek around their houses to prepare vegetables for midsummer.
A Korean saying has it that if it does not rain on Kogu , the earth gets deeply dry. This shows they attached great importance to raining on the day.
On the two subdivisions, the Korean people caught fishes in rivers and the sea. In particular, those living near the Taedong River caught mainly grey mullet, carp and cornet fish.
The two subdivisions of this year fall on April 5 and 20 respectively.
