The DPRK, which has many rivers, lakes and reservoirs of different sizes, abounds in aquatic plants with high economic value and prospects.
Aquatic plants are species which are adapted to live in water, submerged partly or wholly. Some species root in the underwater soil, with some of their vegetal organs distinctively operating underwater and their leaves, stems and reproductive organs above the surface. There are also submerged and floating plants.
According to a survey, there are over 150 species of aquatic plants in the DPRK, the total of which amounts to hundreds of thousands of tons.
In view of ecological function, aquatic plants absorb and accumulate various substances in water. For example, duckweed absorbs heavy metals such as lead, zinc, copper and arsenic, while Scirpus lacustris neutralizes phenol.
There are some plants that neutralize petroleum and its waste, insecticide and herbicide. Lotus flower, Ottelia alismoides, Monochoria korsakowii , water lily, water shield and Nuphar japonica and many others produce ornamental effect in parks, recreation grounds, ponds and ditches for their beautiful flowers and leaves.
Aquatic plants are called “green gold” as they are of great economic value. Many of them, including Alisma canaliculatum, Sagittaria trifolia , sweet flag and lotus flower, have medicinal effects on skin diseases, gynaecologic diseases and other health problems. Some are used as raw materials for fibre- and paper-making and grasswork production and as feed for fowl and other domestic animals. And others serve as food for fishes and their habitat and spawning ground.
Efforts are being made to grow more aquatic plants in different seasons as suited to their growth features and in consideration of their landscape, aesthetic and economic values so that they can contribute to improving the quality of life of the people.
