Song Sung Gwon, head coach of Naegohyang Women’s Football Team, is well known among the Korean people for his tangible contribution to making the DPRK’s women football stand out in the international arena.
Football experts and fans call him an uncompromising and persevering coach who stays the course to attain a goal.
Born into an ordinary worker’s family in Ongjin County, South Hwanghae Province, he had an aptitude for football from childhood. He started his career as a football player in the then sports team of Korea University of Physical Education in 1988. After graduation from the university he led the Amnokgang Sports Club as its coach before being promoted to the head coach of the newly-organized Naegohyang Women’s Football Team.
He used to say to his colleagues that the ability of team and its success in competition are entirely up to us coaches. Let us make women footballers mentally, physically and technically qualified enough to beat any strong teams.
Under such a high goal of training world-famous footballers he devoted himself to training his players.
He occasionally burnt the midnight oil trying to find out the effective tactics and training methods that meet the physical conditions and features of every player on the basis of the study and analysis of world trend of football development and videos of matches by world-class teams.
The tactics and fortes the Korean women footballers expertly employed in matches against strong teams, including surprise attack, well-knit combination between players, correct judgement, side- and half-side breaks and powerful kicks, are unthinkable apart from his scientific guidance.
Song played an active role in leading the DPRK team to win all matches in the then 2017 AFC U-16 Women’s Championships and the 2024 AFC U-17 Women’s Asian Cup. This earned him international fame.
Under his guidance the DPRK team thrashed all strong rivals at the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup to win the World Cup trophy, demonstrating the development of the DPRK’s women football.
Foreign media gave wide publicity to the bright and promising future of the rising DPRK’s women football as well as the beautiful spiritual world and noble sportsmanship of the Korean players.
On the occasion of the new year 2025 the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un met the players and coaches including Song Sung Gwon who brought honour to the country with gold medals and had a photo session with them, blessing the bright future of the country’s women football.
