One day in May 1981 Chairman Kim Jong Il (February 16, 1942-December 17, 2011) decided to open up climbing routes in Myohyang, one of the celebrated mountains in the DPRK, and climbed the mountain with an expedition of senior officials from national agencies.
An official guiding the party told him that the path ahead was so rugged.
He led the way up the steep path, saying that it didn’t matter and that a difficult journey was more rewarding.
When the party reached the Murung Falls, the sky abruptly turned dark and it looked like rain. Members of the expedition requested him to go down the mountain now that he fixed the climbing routes.
But he quickened his steps, proposing going up to the top of the mountain despite the cloudy weather.
When they were approaching the stream over the Yuson Falls across a suspension bridge at a dizzying height after he appreciated the charms of Phal (Eight) Pools, it began to rain.
Ahead of them there was a rock standing askew. The lane under the rock was so narrow that they had to creep to pass through. Worse still, the passage was slippery as it was soaked with rain and the opposite rock had a crack on it, so it looked as if it was about to roll down.
The officials blocked him, requesting him to go no further.
I understand why you are so worried about me. But let’s go on. We didn’t come here for relaxation. Only when we pass through the climbing routes on such a rainy day can we get a detailed understanding of them, he said with a smile.
That day he asked the officials what they felt during the expedition and then gave detailed instructions with regard to the issues related with the sightseeing of the mountain like arranging the climbing routes in a more safe and convenient way, so as to ensure the visitors fully enjoy their leisure activities.
