Koryo celadon is part of the cultural heritage showcasing the artistic prowess and talents of the Korean people.
The bluish porcelain was the acme of the ceramics created in the period of Koryo, a Korean feudal state that existed from 918 to 1392.
With beautiful shape, colour and ornamental patterns, it was so uniquely made to attain high formative and artistic values that it is still the most sought-after treasure.
The colour of the Koryo celadon, clear, vivid, soft and mild, suits the national sentiment and tastes of the Korean people who favour noble things, and is presumably an artistically perfect colour. It was much likened to the azure sky in autumn or after rain, the blue water running down in deep mountains and the crystal-clear water in the Upper Eight Pools of Mt Kumgang and jade. Hence, the celadon was called Koryo jade-green celadon or Koryo celadon.
The Koryo celadon is divided into pure celadon, engraved celadon and inlaid celadon according to the applied techniques. Decorative patterns were diverse so that they could depict different things in nature.
It is also diverse and novel in shape. Most of its shape lines are longish curves, looking slim, flexible and lively. This is why it was also known as “porcelain of lines.”
Today Koryo celadon is manufactured by applying various techniques and the principle of heat engineering, and it most stands out for its harmony in shape, decorative patterns and colour, enriching the treasure trove of ceramics of mankind.
Koryo celadon is on the national intangible cultural heritage list.
