The Biodiversity Institute of the State Academy of Sciences is successfully working on projects to build a nationwide network of reserves and increase their areas phase by phase so as to help protect biodiversity of the country.
In recent years, the institute has designed a 1 700km-odd-long ecological corridor linking major reserves including biosphere, animal and plant reserves.
In addition, it has conducted field surveys to reassess the distribution of each of the Paektusan, Kuwolsan, Myohyangsan, Chilbosan and Kumgangsan biosphere reserves, which were put on the list of the world biosphere reserve network of UNESCO in 1989, 2004, 2009, 2014 and 2018 respectively.
It has also analysed the gap in biodiversity and redesigned the functional areas of the reserves in a rational way, while solving problems arising in the expansion of the areas of the reserves, the areas of their central parts in particular, in favour of the protection of their biodiversity.
Given that the country plays a very important role in the East Asian-Australasian Flyway, the institute has identified more than 10 candidates for migratory bird reserves on a nationwide scale and worked out a design to put them on a national reserve list, thus making it possible to increase the total area of the reserves by at least 100 000 hectares.
This will make a positive contribution to the protection of the country’s biodiversity, sustainable development of the economy and, furthermore, implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
The institute is striving to better protect the country’s biodiversity and ecological environment and expand the areas of the reserves by intensifying the survey of and research into the biodiversity priority areas, in keeping with the steady improvement of forest and natural ecosystem thanks to the state policy on nature conservation.
