The last five years were a period of excitement in which monumental structures sprang up in all parts of the country.

How did such a construction boom begin?

At the Fourth Plenary Meeting of the Eighth Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea held in December 2021, the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un , stressing the need to keep up the heyday of capital city construction and open up a new age of regional changes, said that it is the intention of the Party Central Committee to bring about a new construction revolution geared to radically improving the living environment of all the people across the country within 20 to 30 years.

With a grand plan to transform the whole country beyond recognition once again during the term of the Eighth Party Central Committee, Comrade Kim Jong Un sent a historic letter Let Us Lead the Development of Civilization of Our Own Style of Socialism by Waging a New Revolution in Construction to those attending the Second Grand Short Course of Officials in the Construction Sector.

In the letter he clearly indicated the importance of the position and role of the construction sector in the struggle at the present stage to bring about a fresh victory in socialist construction, the main orientation and basic requirements to be maintained in construction and the tasks and ways for achieving epochal development in construction.

And he gave instructions on the issues of building 50 000 modern dwellings in Pyongyang, turning the Komdok area into a mountain gorge city, a cultured mining city, of flats with a unique character, pushing ahead with large-scale housing construction on an annual basis in provinces, cities and counties, erecting a large number of modern educational and public health facilities and building recreation grounds and tourist resorts for the people in harmony with the beautiful natural scenery in scenic spots of the country so that people can experience socialist civilization to their heart’s content—all as decided at the Party Congress.

His ideas and concrete strategies for realizing them served as a guideline to be held fast to in bringing about a new construction revolution and as a powerful theoretical and practical weapon for opening up a new period of development and leaps forward of Juche-oriented architecture.

Thanks to the blueprint for the great change, the construction in the country was dynamically carried on at a higher level.

In January this year, Comrade Kim Jong Un said that construction revolution does not allow even an iota of self-congratulation or satisfaction and, as an intuitive expression of the contemporary ideas and cultural level, architecture should constantly orient itself to new things and develop, and put forward important tasks which would serve as a guideline for the implementation of the Party’s construction policy.

Today the country’s construction sector is radically developing, representing the steady advance of the state.
