The Oesong Tailor Shop of the Central District Combined Tailor Shop near the Pyongyang Grand Theatre in the heart of the capital city is always crowded with visitors.
Recently we visited the tailor shop and met with Kim Yong Mi, an actress from the National Theatrical Troupe, on her trip to make an order.
“As the saying goes, fine feathers make fine birds,” she said. “I feel self-satisfied when I go out to street in this blue dress. My colleagues and even passers-by appreciate it saying it fits me well, and some of them ask me where I bought it. I tell them I had it tailor-made here.”
Through her remarks, we could easily imagine that the tailor shop wins favour with customers for its good cut.
As if it tried to prove it, a neat array of men’s and women’s tailored suits were on display at the showroom, and a diploma of the best prize at the Garment Exhibition-2024 was hung on a wall.
Kye Un Byol, head of the tailor shop, is good at working out stylish designs that suit the tastes of customers in terms of age, occupation, figure, appearance and seasons.
She studies customers and passers-by in the streets to get new ideas on fashions, colours and shapes by age. Her forte is to give a full play to curves in design to offer three-dimensional effects and convenience in movement. She has produced at least 100 designs in recent several years.
Many of customers go over her designs before selecting their own choice for order.
The cutters and machinists do their best to satisfy the demands of customers.
“Beauty greatly depends on outfit, I think,” said Kim Ok Gum, a cutter. “What you are in decides who you are. In this sense, we are ‘gardeners’ of human beauty.”
They have set their sights on new fashions in keeping with the development of civilization. Thanks to their efforts, the citizens and streets of Pyongyang are getting more beautiful.
