April 7 is World Health Day. The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea entered the World Health Organization in 1973. In the DPRK human lives are regarded as the most important thing. Its government increases the state investment in public health sector in a systematic manner and at the same time channels much effort into developing the public health service.
Adopting the buildup of the public health capacity as the most important state affair, the country set the adequate provision of medical facilities and equipment, workers and supplies as the four essential factors for assessing public health capacity and made a series of achievements to this end. Thus last year was recorded as the first year of making a healthcare revolution.
The Pyongyang General Hospital was built as a symbol of socialist public health. It was followed by the successive erection of hospitals in Kusong City and Kangdong and Ryonggang counties, all with modern facilities and wonderful medical service conditions. All this provided a solid springboard for rebuilding and developing the country’s public health sector on an advanced basis.
A remarkable progress was made in the effort to modernize the pharmaceutical factories and medical appliances factories so as to cement the material and technical foundation of the public health sector.
The Ninth Congress of the Workers’ Party of Korea held in February set forth the task for rapidly introducing the successes gained in the healthcare revolution started in 2025 to the whole public health sector to make the people practically enjoy the benefits of the socialist public health and put the foundation of the country’s public health on a higher level.
In the period of the new long-term plan new hospitals with a perfect combination of modern and civilized qualities will be successively built in the capital and provinces.
In parallel, a number of projects will be launched to facelift the public health sector of the country all at once by building individual public health facilities and the nationwide infrastructure for medical service, improving medical treatment and service, training talents and promoting scientific research altogether.
