One day in December 1992, President Kim Il Sung said to officials.
“I wrote ‘The people are my God’ in my reminiscences and this means that I regard them as Heaven. That ‘The people are my God’ is my constant view and philosophy. Throughout my life, since I embarked on the road of revolution up to now, I have considered the people as Heaven, served them and made the revolution drawing on their strength.”
That “The people are my God” was the motto of President Kim Il Sung who was endowed with affection for and trust in the people.
In the 1930s when the anti-Japanese revolutionary struggle was at its height, Pak In Jin, a regional leader of the Chondoist religion, met General Kim Il Sung and asked him: Do you worship anything, like we believe in Heaven? If you do any, what is it?
General Kim Il Sung answered: Of course, there is something I believe in like God; that is the people; I worship the people as I would do Heaven, and respect them as if they were God. My God is none other than the people. Only the masses are omniscient, omnipotent and almighty on the earth; therefore, I regard “The people are my God” as my lifetime motto.
The people he valued and put forward so much were not superhuman beings or a group of some special persons.
They were ordinary people—those who had lived with no political rights for so long time, deprived of their national sovereignty by the Japanese, those who laid down their lives in the fight against the Japanese military rule, shouting “Long live national independence!” and workers and peasants who toiled at factories and in fields.
They were his people and God.
As he regarded it as his firm faith and motto that the people were his God and mentor and the main driving force of the revolution, he was always among them and led the Korean revolution to victory by relying on their strength.
