Days ago, a staff reporter visited the Pyongyang Baby Home after hearing the news on the healthy growth of the first quintuplets in the DPRK to whom Pak Kyong Sim, 28, living in Moranbong District, Pyongyang, gave birth in January at the Pyongyang Maternity Hospital.
The reporter was greeted by Choe Jong Sil, the principal of the home. She introduced the home as a national educational and childcare institution that looks after parentless children, those beyond parental care and triplets and above until they reach the age when they attend kindergarten, adding that orphans, eight sets of triplets and the quintuplets are now staying at the home.
The kind and variety of daily necessities for the children including dairy products, foodstuffs and clothes supplied by the state are so huge that it is difficult to count them up and the state regularly provide them with rare fish, tonics, tropical fruits and other materials, she said.
We headed for the room of the quintuplets (two boys and three girls).
All of them were so plump and quite lovely. One was toddling on a walker led by a nurse’s hand while another was crawling on all fours. “Although they were born at the same time, they are different in growth and intellectual development,” smiled Choe.
More than 90 days have passed since they were moved to the home and all of them are now in good health.
At birth they weighed 1.28kg, 1.58kg, 1.29kg, 1.42kg and 1.11kg and they now reached the national standard of growth and development of children.
The fourth born was the fattiest and the last born was cleverer than her elders.
The staff reporter was happy to see them.
The babies are now under the care of five nurses, two cooks and two doctors, and the officials and other employees also take parental care of them.
The nurses take hygienic and nutritional care of the children in a scientific way.
Chief nurse U Myong Suk said that they are applying various methods to promote the balanced growth and development of the babies.
The parents of the babies are deeply moved by the benefits of the benevolent country to see their children growing beyond recognition.
The staff reporter left the home, wishing the babies a happy future.
