Candidate Academician and Professor Ri Yong Sop, PhD and a researcher at the faculty of mechanics of Kim Il Sung University, is honoured with the titles of Merited Scientist and meritorious person of socialist patriotism. He is recognized as an authority on solid mechanics in the country.
Ri graduated from Kim Il Sung University in 1980, and he wrote a paper about solid mechanics. But his paper turned out to be only theoretical and hardly applicable into practice.
This led him to turn to solving sci-tech problems of practical significance. After years of painstaking efforts in a workplace, he completed a paper on evaluating the lifespan of high-voltage electric conduits, which was appreciated in the academic circle as an essay with feasibility.
In 2018 he found out the reason for a malfunction of a turbine of a thermal power station and contributed a relevant essay to an international journal published by the Lambert Academic Publishing in Germany. The Lambert edited his essay and published a booklet in his name titled “Influence of convection heat transfer on crack of steam turbine rotor”.
Ri carried out dozens of research projects including the introduction and generalization for the first time at home of a new method of removing the residual stress of structures.
In February 2015, he was awarded the February 16 Sci-tech Prize, the highest honour in the country’s science and technology sector.
He pioneered several subjects such as plastic mechanics and creep theory and wrote at least 20 textbooks and reference books as well as many papers, some of which were published on international journals.
He has under his belt more than 70 certificates including state certificates of registration of sci-tech achievements, state certificates of introduction of sci-tech hits and certificates of invention.
