On April 22, 1970, the international community held the first gathering to call for having a better understanding of the protection of the ecological environment of the earth.
Since then the protection of the ecological environment of the earth has drawn international attention as an issue that requires concerted efforts of all everywhere. In 1973 the international community designated April 22 as World Earth Day.
The ecological environment of the earth can be improved and protected in a sustainable way only when everyone on the earth makes willing and concerted efforts–not through any control or coercion.
Thus, this year’s theme for World Earth Day is “Our Power, Our Planet,” which highlights the fact that the concerted efforts for the protection of the ecological environment of the earth will bring about a new change to maintain and consolidate the balance of the ecosystem of the earth.
The protection of the ecological environment is growing in importance in the DPRK which strives to step up the comprehensive development of socialism.
The Ninth Congress of the Workers’ Party of Korea stressed the need to facilitate innovation in the protection of the ecological environment and take steady and substantial measures to this end.
The Central Committee of the Nature Conservation Union of Korea works to encourage everyone to turn out for the conservation of the ecological environment, conscious that it is geared to protecting their health and providing themselves with a better living environment.
Projects are pushed forward in a planned manner to organically combine economic work with environmental protection so as to prevent air and water pollution, remove the source of all sorts of pollution and restore the damaged environment.
Efforts are made nationwide to improve the overall road infrastructure and cover the bare land with cover plants in order to keep dust from polluting the air.
Relevant authorities make it a rule to let all keep abreast of the international standards and their requirements concerning the environmental protection and work in conformity with them, while tightening their control over the conservation of the ecological environment.
