Moxibustion is one of the cultural heritage items created and developed by the Korean people from olden times.
It is a Koryo medicinal therapy for treating various diseases by stimulating different meridian nerve points in human body with heat generated when burning dried wormwood. Wormwood is ubiquitous in the DPRK.
From the Stone Age the Korean ancestors began to use stone needles and wormwood in treating diseases, and they carried on the traditional therapy generation after generation.
In the period of Koryo, a feudal state of Korea which existed from 918 to 1392, moxibustion was widely encouraged to make rapid development.
According to old documents, medical education was given in Kaegyong (what is now Kaesong) and other areas of Korea, with the main focus on moxibustion and acupuncture therapies.
Chimgugyonghombang compiled in 1644 in the period of the feudal Joson dynasty (1392-1910), the last feudal state of Korea, explains in detail about how to apply moxibustion to treating different diseases.
The therapy, one of major achievements of Koryo medicine created by the Korean ancestors, has been promoted and carried forward in modern times.
Moxibustion is highly efficacious in treating ischemic heart diseases, digestive diseases and nervous system diseases. It can be applied anywhere if some moxa and a place for the patient to lie in are available.
Current development is featured by an indirect method of using Kumgang medicinal stone and a procedure combined with acupuncture.
The value and vitality of the therapy are on the increase with each passing day.
