National Intangible Cultural Heritage Item–Custom of Using a Hundred Species of Flowers

From olden times the Korean people have loved flowers for their ornamental and medicinal value and also created various customs to enrich their dietary life.
One of them is the custom of using a hundred species of flowers, or the method of making liquor with a hundred species of flowers.
A Korean saying has it that if you drink the liquor made with a hundred species of flowers, it will cure you of a hundred kinds of diseases and help you live to be a hundred years old.
What is particularly important in making the liquor is to properly set the combination rate of a hundred species of flowers which have been plucked from mountains and fields from early spring till late autumn.
The Paekhaksan General Foodstuff-processing Factory in Rason Municipality produces the liquor on a standardized basis by using the blossoms of over a hundred species of medicinal plants, while preserving its traditional distilling method.
Jang Mi Ok, who has been working at the factory for more than 20 years, began to get interested in the medicinal effects of hundred species of flowers with which she had cured her husband’s disease.
Born at a mountain village, she travelled along rugged mountain paths to get the flowers of the medicinal plants growing in thick forests. After repeated experimentations and tests, she finally distilled the liquor.
Her applied technology of making the liquor was awarded a national patent, and the custom of using a hundred species of flowers was placed on the national intangible cultural heritage list last year.
The liquor has been exhibited in several exhibitions including the annual Rason International Trade Fair. It is gaining popularity at home and abroad.
