In March the air of spring is distinctly felt all over in the DPRK.
The month has Kyongchip and Chunbun , two of the 24 seasonal subdivisions by the lunar calendar. Falling on March 5 or 6 by the solar calendar, Kyongchip is the third of the seasonal subdivisions that are obtained by dividing the orbit of the earth around the sun by 24. Chunbun is the fourth of the seasonal subdivisions and falls on March 20 or 21 by the solar calendar.
Kyongchip means the end of hibernation. In this period, insects hibernating under the ground begin to move, awoken from deep sleep by thawing snow, rumbling thunders and falling rain.
Chunbun signifies the end of winter and the start of spring. That day the day and night are almost of equal length. Around this time, it often blows hard, but the weather grows mild and the ground frozen all winter long thaws completely.
With the approach of these days, Koreans traditionally cleaned the surrounding environment to clear away all the traces of winter before setting out on farm work. They started the year’s farming—ploughing the fields and planting potato, sesame, barley, watermelon, cucumber and other crops, as well as balsam and other flowering-plant and tree seedlings.
They also made delicious foods with sprouting wild herbs, typically shepherd’s purse and giant garlic among them, feeling the fragrance of spring.
And they collected different medicinal herbs to use them for future purposes, and danced and played farm music wishing they would reap a rich harvest in the year.
This year’s Kyongchip and Chunbun fall on March 5 and 20 respectively.
