Paektu is the highest mountain in the DPRK, rising 2 750m above sea level in the northern part of Samjiyon City, Ryanggang Province.
From olden times Korean ancestors called it their ancestral mountain as all other mountain ranges of the country stretched out from it.
They also called it Thaebaek, Pulham, Kaemadae, Tothae and Paek as it is as high as heaven and is mysteriously white.
The worship of Mt Paektu as the site of the sacred cause of nation-building and as the ancestral mountain ran through the protracted period of Ancient Joson, Koguryo, Palhae and Koryo.
A long time ago Korean ancestors claimed scientifically in documents that Mt Paektu is the ancestral mountain that forms the foundation of all other mountains in the country.
A book published in the 17th century wrote that “all the mountains of our country originate from Mt Paektu.” And a map made by Kim Jong Ho, a famous geographer, marked the Great Paektu Mountains in a bold line to stress that Mt Paektu is the ancestral home of all other mountains of the country.
Mt Paektu as the ancestral mountain is well reflected in the medieval works left by literary men who personally explored it.
The book Account of Trip to Mt Paektu written by a literary man in 1764 after touring the mountain gave a vivid portrayal of its peaks and Lake Chon, stressing that the time-honoured history and brilliant cultural tradition of the country “benefitted from the sublime spirit of Mt Paektu.”
New historical relics have recently been discovered in the vast area of Mt Paektu, showing the patriotic spirit and customs of Koreans who worshipped the mountain as their ancestral mountain.
In particular, the graves, relics dating back to the feudal Joson dynasty (1392-1910), are objective and convincing evidence confirming that Koreans had buried their ancestors’ remains in Mt Paektu that they worshipped as the ancestral mountain.
Mt Paektu is more famous as a sacred mountain of the revolution: It preserves many relics showing the revolutionary activities of the great leader Comrade Kim Il Sung who liberated the country on August 15, 1945 by organizing and leading the 20-year-long anti-Japanese revolutionary struggle. The great leader Comrade Kim Jong Il was born there, and the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un visited it several times.
