The Eighth Congress of the Workers’ Party of Korea held in January 2021 set it as a core task in socialist construction to promote the development of science and technology.
Later, several Party and state meetings highlighted the necessity of consistently developing science and technology as an important state policy and thoroughly implementing it in all fields and sectors–an idea of adhering to the principle of attaching importance and giving precedence to science and technology.
With an eye to those problems that were badly needed to be solved in the economic construction and the improvement of the people’s livelihood, scientists and technicians stepped up projects for research and development to achieve valuable successes.
Energy-saving oxygen blast furnaces and large oxygen plants were additionally installed and advanced desulfurization lines established at leading metallurgical bases to provide a sure guarantee for increased production. And the production lines for sodium carbonate, melamine resin and crystal thenardite were set up in the large-scale chemical bases, and the electric power industry provided a sci-tech guarantee for reducing the loss of power in transmission and increasing output.
Meanwhile, scientists and technicians in the agricultural sector developed high-performance farm machines, sci-tech products of great significance such as an agricultural sci-tech information system, regenerated rice cultivation technology and soil-covering paper production technology. Research hits conducive to supporting the development of light industry and regional industry were also brought about.
Many industrial establishments up and down the country seethed with mass technological innovation drives and, in the course of this, a wide range of sci-tech problems were tackled in production and construction.
This remarkable change in the sector of science and technology is proof positive of the enhancement of the country’s total capacity in science and technology.
