Celebrated mountains, scenic spots and historical sites and relics in different parts of the DPRK are associated with many myths, legends and other folk tales reflecting the aspiration, desire and artistic talents of the Korean people. It is of great significance in protecting the cultural heritage of the country to preserve, inherit and develop these folk tales.
In recent years, the Faculty of Korean Linguistics at Kim Il Sung University has worked to verify folk tale legacies in a scientific way and place them on the national intangible cultural heritage list.
Teachers and researchers at the faculty started to verify the myths related to the birth of the first class state, an ancient state in Korea, folk tales about contemporary historical figures, the factor of the creation, background and evolution of the legends associated with celebrated mountains, their influence on the contemporary social and cultural sectors, the affinity with and difference from similar legacies in other regions, and the national characteristics of relevant tales.
They collected lots of old books and travelled around different places to discover and register old legends one after another.
In the course of this, they put on the national intangible cultural heritage list over 10 folk tales including Legend of Jumong , Legend of Ulji Mun Dok , Tales about Pongi Kim Sondal and Old Legends of Mt Paektu .
Many of their books on folklore literature stood out at the exhibition of intangible cultural heritage items-2025 held last year.
At the exhibition a special diploma was awarded to the Faculty of Korean Linguistics at Kim Il Sung University in recognition of their contribution to preserving and glorifying the excellent history and tradition of the Korean people.
