President Kim Il Sung regarded it as his motto to believe in the people as in Heaven since he embarked on the road of revolution. The following is an episode in his career.
When the agrarian reform was in force in Korea after its liberation on August 15, 1945, a religious believer living in Ryonggang County was defined as a landlord as he had a patch of field and an orchard. So he had all of them confiscated and was ordered to move to the other place. He was writhing in agony day after day. But he was a conscientious believer who had lived upright maintaining Korean identity even in the days of the Japanese imperialists’ military occupation (1905-1945).
On learning about it, Comrade Kim Il Sung said that some officials arbitrarily interpreted the agrarian reform law and wrongly implemented it, and he expressed his indignation at what made the man defined as a landlord and even banished though he had no more than five hectares of land.
Then he took a measure to return the field and orchard to the owner.
When he and his family and neighbours were told about that, they were all overwhelmed by emotion and said that Comrade Kim Il Sung is the God of Korea who is taking care of all people in the country.
An official who was working at a power organ told Comrade Kim Il Sung that he shared the feelings with them.
Comrade Kim Il Sung said as follows:
It is not me but people who should be upheld as genuine God. This is not an empty talk, but a faith I’ve got to have as I have waged the revolutionary struggle so far. I have my own disciplines in believing in the people as in God. First, it is to uphold the people as the Heaven and serve them. Second, it is to sacrifice yourself for the sake of them. Third, it is to rely on them in doing everything and implement it by dint of their strength.
Later, the official recalled that Comrade Kim Il Sung highly respected the people while humbling himself, that his outlook on the people neither followed the lines of the Bible nor pursued a political tactics to gain public favour with feigned modesty, and that what he wished was to make the people become masters of their own destiny and the country.
