The Myohyangsan History Museum is situated at the foot of Mt Myohyang, a celebrated mountain of the DPRK.
The museum covers the whole of Pohyon Temple, one of the famous temples in the country showcasing the outstanding architecture and excellent artistic skills of the Korean ancestors.
With an area of over 50 000 square metres, it houses Taeung Hall, Manse Pavilion, Ryongsan Hall, Suchung Temple, a bell house, the storehouse for the 80 000 Blocks of Complete Collection of Buddhist Scriptures and other relics in the compound of the Pohyon Temple.
The museum has Jogye, Haethal and Chonwang gates.
The Chonwang Gate leads in turn to the tetragonal 9-storeyed pagoda, Manse Pavilion, octagonal 13-storeyed pagoda and Taeung Hall.
The tetragonal 9-storeyed pagoda is an exquisite granite tower built in the early period of the Koryo dynasty (918-1392).
With a hip-saddle roof, Manse Pavilion perches on a slope, its frontal half consisting of two storeys and its back half forming a single storey.
The octagonal 13-storeyed pagoda in the yard between Manse Pavilion and Taeung Hall was elaborately built with well-trimmed granite. It is a typical Korean structure in the Middle Ages in terms of construction and decoration.
Taeung Hall, the main building of the Pohyon Temple, is magnificent and splendid.
Kwanum Hall stands east of Taeung Hall, with Mansu Pavilion west of the former. The pavilion was built for the royal family in 1894 at the end of the feudal Joson dynasty (1392-1910).
The storehouse for the 80 000 Blocks of Complete Collection of Buddhist Scriptures was built in 1983.
Preserved in the storehouse are wooden blocks of the complete collection of Buddhist scriptures and other relics showing the wisdom and talents of the Korean ancestors who rendered a great service to the development of the world’s printing technology by making wooden types and the first metal types in the world.
Ryongsan Hall and Suchung Temple sit east of Kwanum Hall.
The Suchung Temple was built in memory of Abbots Sosan and Samyongdang, both better known as volunteers’ corps commanders during the Imjin Patriotic War (1592-1598).
The museum greets a large number of visitors including foreigners and overseas compatriots.
