An elderly couple of badminton enthusiasts stole the show at an autumn sports competition of the elderly in October this year.
They were Choe Chol Su and Kim Pok Sil in their mid-sixties living in Tongsin-dong No. 2, Tongdaewon District, Pyongyang.
The couple displayed good teamwork performing both attack and defence with movements as nimble and agile as young people, holding the spectators spellbound.
An official of the Central Committee of the Korea Federation for the Care of the Aged said the couple displayed good manners and wonderful skills in the recent matches.
Choe and his wife have ever achieved triumphs at several badminton competitions of the elderly.
It was four years ago when Choe Chol Su took part in the sports competition of the elderly for the first time. After retirement he once heard of the event through the media.
The event was organized according to the state’s elderly care policy and it was open to every hopeful.
He decided to attend it and began to learn how to play badminton.
With an unusual aptitude for football and other ball games since his childhood, Choe could perform any technical movements in a short time after he started to learn. Not long after this, his wife followed suit. Badminton gradually became part and parcel of the couple’s life.
They practised hard in the badminton courts at ubiquitous sports parks and recreation grounds in Pyongyang.
Choe finished third in the men’s doubles in his debut competition of the elderly and amateurs, which was held in the autumn of 2022. The following year he and his wife came first in the mixed doubles.
The couple has at least 10 diplomas and medals under their belts.
When congratulated on their success and asked about the secret behind it, they attribute it to the state that provides the elderly with conditions and environment for keeping health and vigour.
