May 5 is International Day of the Midwife.
On the occasion of the day every year, the International Confederation of Midwives conducts various activities aimed at giving social prominence to midwives and encouraging them to take an active part in improving medical service for maternity women and newborn babies.
The DPRK pays due attention to enhancing the role of midwives who are directly responsible for the health and life of women and newborns.
It has established educational institutions for midwives in the capital city and every province, which work out teaching programmes on the basis of the theories and clinical practices of midwifery in line with international standards and improve educational contents and methods with the main focus on practical clinical experience.
The institutions direct special efforts to ensuring that the trainees have a good understanding of the symptoms related to abnormal pregnancy and childbirth and gynaecological diseases and relevant control measures and proficiently deal with any circumstances by themselves.
After finishing the training courses they cooperate with obstetricians at Pyongyang Maternity Hospital, provincial maternity hospitals, county hospitals and ri hospitals in medical treatment, contributing to protecting the lives of maternity women and newborn babies and promoting their health.
They perform regular medical checkups of pregnant women and nursing mothers to confirm normal pregnancy, detect risky symptoms in their early stages and provide them with proper medical service, prenatal education, hygienic education and quality care during and after delivery.
And they find out women who are pregnant with several babies in time to guarantee the lives of the women and babies.
As a result, healthy babies are born every year, adding joy and happiness to families and society. Last year quintuplets were born for the first time in the country.
