Etched in the annals of the revolutionary career of President Kim Il Sung are the efforts he made to lay foundations for the development of Kwaksan County, North Phyongan Province.
Several decades ago, when he paid a visit to the then Jungdan Agricultural Cooperative in Soktong-ri, Kwaksan County, agricultural cooperatives organized across the countryside were displaying their advantages.
He got together with officials of the cooperative and said to them: It is necessary to gradually move the houses scattered around in the fields to the foot of the mountain, and conduct irrigation projects and improve afforestation and water conservation as suited to the landform and make pools so as to ensure stable farming. It is also needed to turn more land into paddy fields to boost rice yields. The members of the cooperative should raise many domestic animals such as pigs and cattle to produce meat and obtain manure to increase the crop yields. The cooperative should build more orchards.
Thus, he gave detailed instructions on the directions and ways to get the members of the cooperative well-off.
During his visit to the then Kwaksan branch of the state-run Jongju Fruit Farm that day, he was very pleased to see apple trees heavily laden with fruits.
You have been able to increase the fruit yields year on year by taking good care of the trees because you have worked hard with a positive idea that you will supply delicious fruits as many as possible to the people, he said as he highly appreciated the efforts of the branch officials and workers.
He listened to the experience gained in having produced 60 tons of apples per hectare and stressed the need to widely publicize and generalize that experience across the country. He said: It is essential to plant fruit trees on sunny hills and foot of mountains and meticulously choose the species that meet the climatic and soil conditions, so as to plant high-quality species. We should create orchards from a long-term perspective so that future generations could be well-off.
He gave important instructions, spending hours unceremoniously with ordinary workers. As he left the village, he asked them to continue to work hard.
Today Kwaksan County is strengthening its existing foundations for further development as it erects modern rural houses in different farms and builds or renovates rice seedling greenhouses, Koryo medicine pharmaceutical factory and other structures one after another.
