The Fourth Plenary Meeting of the Eighth Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea held in late December 2021 set forth a rural revolution programme in the new era and stressed the need to transform the country’s agriculture into an advanced one and achieve a stable and sustained growth of agricultural production with science and technology as the main driving force for agricultural development.
In recent years successes have been achieved in the efforts to do farming in a scientific and technological way; dynamic efforts were made to improve seeds, establish a scientific farming system and methods to cope with disastrous abnormal weather, and ensure promptness and scientific accuracy of weather forecasting.
The agricultural sector launched an online consultative system and a management information system on a nationwide scale to ensure a unified and scientific guidance over farming operations. A huge database including data for digital plot map was deployed to provide a guarantee for putting agricultural production on a high IT basis.
Meanwhile, IT was widely applied to ensure a proper distribution of crops and varieties across the country and scientifically assess and predict the implementation of the farming operations by plots and seasons, growth of crops, damage by outbreak of pests and drought and estimated crop yields.
Amid the soaring enthusiasm for scientific farming, many farms around the country achieved good results in grain production by adopting a method of cultivating cold-bed rice seedlings, organic farming based on earthworm and mud snail, intercropping and mixed cropping and fish farming in paddy fields.
Hwanggumbol , a platform for disseminating agricultural science and technology, and Hwanggumyolmae , an application for distance Q&A service for agricultural technology, contributed to boosting the grain output.
The Ninth Congress of the WPK held last February pointed to the need to maintain scientific farming as an important guarantee for the boosted output.
Accordingly, the drive for scientific farming is gathering fresh momentum in the rural communities across the country.
