Recent years have witnessed a rapid progress in the DPRK’s agriculture.
What is noteworthy is that vigorous efforts were made to convert its agriculture into an advanced one and achieve stable and sustainable growth of agricultural production with science and technology as a major engine for agricultural development.
Many agricultural scientific research institutes were renovated or newly built, marked progress was made in the drive to put the agricultural production on a scientific, IT and intensive basis, and advanced farming methods and agricultural sci-tech products were broadly introduced into farming operations.
In addition, steady efforts were also made to technically upgrade agricultural scientific research institutes.
The Academy of Agricultural Science modernly built up many of its branch institutes, and South Phyongan, South Hwanghae and other provinces renovated their agricultural scientific research institutes.
An online consultation system and management information system were established in the agricultural sector, making it possible to keep tabs on the farming processes, supply and consumption of farming materials and estimated crop yields in all the farms across the country.
Amid growing enthusiasm for scientific farming, projects to introduce advanced farming methods and technologies more and earlier than others were conducted in a competitive way in all parts of the country.
Last year alone many agricultural production units across the country produced high yields by adopting the rice cultivation based on nutrient cold-bed seedlings, rice-seedling growing by means of soilless substrates, fertilizer application through irrigation to paddy fields, mulching cultivation method, inter- and mixed-cropping, electrical pulse water treatment device, effective irrigation method and effective organic farming using mud snails in keeping with their specific conditions.
