The great leader Comrade Kim Il Sung was the first to kindle the flames of the movement for planting trees in the DPRK.
Korea was liberated on August 15, 1945 from the Japanese military occupation that began in 1905. The next spring Kim Il Sung went up Moran Hill to unfold a far-reaching plan for turning the country into a people’s paradise covered with thick forests.
Under his wise leadership, the mountains and fields of the country gradually began to turn green, but they were devastated again due to the war (June 1950-July 1953) unleashed by the US imperialists.
On March 14, 1952, Kim Il Sung attended a plenary meeting of the Taedong County Committee of South Phyongan Province of the Workers’ Party of Korea. At the meeting he said: Forests are a precious asset of the country. After we win the war, we will need a great deal of timber to rehabilitate the destroyed national economy. It is necessary to create many forests through an all-people movement.
Therefore, a campaign for afforestation was launched when the war was at its height.
Meanwhile, a measure was taken to appoint a large number of soldiers as forest rangers and dispatch them to different regions.
During the war the Korean people overfulfilled the plan for planting trees every year despite the enemy’s heavy bombing, restoring the mountains and fields as vast as nearly 300 000 hectares that had been devastated by the enemy.
The country designated the day when Kim Il Sung kindled the torch of tree-planting during the fierce war as Tree-planting Day. The Korean people plant a lot of trees in the mountains and fields when the tree-planting seasons come round every year.
