South Hamgyong Province’s Kumya County has a wide expanse of wetland areas rich in water resources, plants and animals, which provide an ideal habitat for migratory birds.
More than 200 species of birds are observed every year in the wetlands where various types of ecosystems, including big lakes, river estuaries and reed forests and wide paddy fields, present picturesque natural scenery.
Swarms of water birds often visit the areas of the lower reaches of the Kumya and Tokji rivers which empty into the East Sea of Korea.
The areas consist of diverse types of wetlands such as swamps, marshes, reed and paddy fields, salt fields and seashores which are favourable for the inhabitation of water birds and stopover of migratory birds. They also abound with such aquatic animals as carp, goldfish, shellfish and shrimp, and such plants as wateroat, cattail and reed.
The areas were designated as a national migratory bird (wetland) reserve in 1995 and put on the list of the East Asian-Australasian Flyway Network Sites in 2018.
The reserve is regularly inhabited by tens of thousands of migratory birds including mute swan, bean goose and coot.
In the migrating period of every spring thousands of gooses fly to the reserve, which is of value for international protection.
Riversides and their surrounding paddy fields are regularly visited by cranes including Manchurian crane and hooded crane to stay for a brief time in the migrating periods of spring and autumn.
The Kumya Grus japonensis is under protection as a living monument.
Besides, various other species of birds can be found in the mountains and fields in and around the Kumya wetland areas and their basins.
The DPRK makes a major effort to the wetland protection and management to enrich natural environment.
