February 2 is World Wetlands Day.
Wetlands are regarded as valuable resources indispensible for human existence and sustainable development as they perform such various functions as climate control, water storage, flood prevention, degradation of pollutants and biodiversity protection.
For this reason wetlands are called the Earth’s infrastructure and a source of life and culture.
According to data available, 60% of mankind live in coastal areas and over 1 billion people earn income from fishing, aquaculture and wetland tourism.
Such important wetlands, however, continue to be destroyed for several reasons, resulting in a considerable decrease in their area.
Therefore, the UN set February 2, the day when the Ramsar Convention, an agreement on wetlands of internationally special importance including water-bird habitat, was adopted, as World Wetlands Day, and holds various events for wetland protection on the occasion of the day every year.
In step with the international effort the DPRK has pushed a variety of projects for the protection and sustainable use of wetlands.
The country adopted several laws and regulations including those on environmental protection, nature reserves and rivers and chose migratory bird (wetland) reserves in Mundok, Sindo, Kumya, Rason, Kangnyong and other parts along the east and west coasts. On the basis of this it conducts a variety of activities to protect ecological environment.
The Central Committee of the Nature Conservation Union of Korea, in cooperation with foreign environmental protection bodies, intensifies an ecological survey of migratory birds in wetland reserves and gives wide publicity to the importance and significance of wetlands.
As a result of this effort, it has been discovered that many rare and endangered species of migratory birds in the world take the local wetlands as their major habitats.
The theme of this year’s World Wetlands Day is Wetlands and Traditional Knowledge: Celebrating Cultural Heritage.
