Ri Il Bong, near to 70, lives at Neighbourhood Unit No. 116, Janghun-dong No. 1, Mangyongdae District, Pyongyang. His family is called a family of inventors.
Ri Il Bong and his two sons have many certificates of invention under their belt.
Thus far, Ri has come up with scores of inventions.
His connection with science dates back to more than 20 years when he visited a vegetable farm.
He found that farmers were struggling with the combat with blight, and pondered over how to tackle the problem.
One morning, on his way to work, he happened to look at ginkgo trees at the roadside.
Traditionally, ginkgo leaves and nuts have been widely used to cure diseases in Korea.
He repeated experiments on ginkgo leaves until he made an insecticide that proved effective in practice.
He went on to develop lawn growth stimulant, hygienic water, gargle, skin lotion and artificial honey.
His inventions are all featured by reliance on locally available raw materials, with many of them patented at home.
“Each invention designed by any of us is associated with our family’s efforts to make even a little contribution to national prosperity,” elder son Ri In Guk said. “We will work together with father to produce more inventions for economic development, improvement of the people’s living standards and promotion of public health.”
