May 9 is World Migratory Birds Day.
Migratory birds fly through different countries and regions according to seasons, and they are under global protection.
But they are sharply decreasing in terms of species and population as their main habitats such as estuaries, tidelands, lakes, rivers and swamps are spoilt or reduced under the influence of climate change, environmental pollution and land reclamation.
For this reason, many countries are paying close attention to their protection.
The DPRK is situated in the heart of the East Asian-Australasian flyway which has seen numerous migratory birds moving around in flocks every year.
With migratory bird (wetland) reserves in Mundok, Sindo, Kangnyong, Kumya, Rason and other places along the east and west coasts, it channels efforts into the protection of migratory birds and their habitats.
In every spring and autumn hundreds of thousands of migratory birds including swan goose, far-eastern curlew and hooded crane make a stopover in the Mundok Migratory Bird (Wetland) Reserve which is on the Ramsar List (a list of wetlands of international importance.)
Research institutes regularly carry on surveys of the migratory bird reserves and other habitats as a whole to get an up-to-date assessment of the characteristics of their distribution on a seasonal and yearly basis. This provides the groundwork of measures to be taken for protection.
This year the Biodiversity Institute of the State Academy of Sciences conducted a survey of migratory birds wintering in major wetlands along the east and west coasts and in inland areas. Springtime survey is now underway.
According to the survey results, local wetlands are still home to many of the globally rare and endangered species.
The Central Committee of the Nature Conservation Union of Korea plays its part by conducting activities to raise public awareness of the importance and significance of the protection.
