Racial Discrimination – Obstacle to Sustainable Development, Threat to Peace and Security

High-handed and arbitrary practices in international relations are now leading to ever-aggravating political, economic, and social inequality.
At a UN session held last March on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, representatives from various countries and international organisations stated that not only does racial discrimination offend human rights and dignity but also take a toll on numerous lives. It has negative impacts on the whole of society, they said, including forced assimilation of ethnic minorities and persons of indigenous origins, and inhumane treatment of immigrants.
Racial discrimination is directly linked to outstanding global issues like poverty, climate crisis and conflicts, and has become a structural problem threatening international peace and security, they said and underlined that it is a violation of human rights as well as an obstacle to sustainable development and a threat to peace and security.
Stating that the building of a fair and equal world without discrimination of any kind requires the elimination of all forms of racial discrimination, they unanimously called for practical law enforcement, stronger commitment to responsibilities, acknowledgement of and compensation for past crimes, and an uncompromising struggle against neo-Nazism and other radical forms of modern-day racial discrimination.
