The site of Koguryo’s wooden bridge over the Taedong River is the remains of a big wooden bridge built in front of the Anhak Palace, a royal palace that existed in the period of Koguryo (277 BC-AD 668).
The unearthed remains suggest that the bridge was roughly 375m long and 9m wide, and its framework was built with rectangular lumbers, 8-10m long, 38cm wide and 26cm thick.
The entrance resembled the ribs of a fan, and guardrails were placed along the edges for the safety of pedestrians.
All big and small connections were tightly interlinked without using any metallic joints such as nails or clamps. This shows that the Koguryo people knew that it is more superior to link parts of wooden structures to be exposed to water by dovetailing rather than using metallic joints.
The bridge had some additional facilities. Found east of its entrance was the site of a dovetailed wooden lamp post, 1.12m from east to west and 1.54m from north to south, on a solid foundation.
In addition, pieces of roofing tiles and earthenware dating back to the period of Koguryo, as well as the framework of the bridge, were discovered. Such a big and old wooden bridge was quite rare in the world at that time.
The site shows the contemporary advanced architecture of Koguryo.
