February 16, 1984, was a significant day marking the 42nd birth anniversary of Kim Jong Il.

On the day, officials earnestly requested him to have a rest that day alone. But Kim Jong Il said to them that he could not have a rest as he had many things to do and added that he was going to discuss measures to further promote the people's standard of living at the consultative meeting.

He also said: It is the supreme principle of our party activities to constantly improve the people's living. For our Party, no task is more important than improving the people's living by carrying on the economic construction properly. It is a firm determination of our Party to improve the people's living at an early date.

In order to improve the people's standard of living, it is necessary to do good farming, further develop the fishing industry and build a lot of houses in towns and the countryside, he said and clarified tasks for their implementation one by one.

He said it is important to carry out a revolution in light industry in particular, and continued: When we produce a lot of various consumer goods of good quality by carrying out the revolution in light industry, it is possible for the people to enjoy an affluent and civilized life.

And he presented specific tasks and ways to bring about a fresh change in the production of consumer goods.

As he was so concerned about the people's standard of living, he gave crucial instructions on the improvement of the people's living without having a rest even on his significant birth anniversary.

He made public famous works including "It Is the Most Important Revolutionary Task of Our Party to Improve the People's Living Standards Decisively" and "Look after the People in a Responsible Manner as a Mother Would Do with Her Children" on many other occasions, providing a priceless guideline for improving the people's standard of living.

Only for the Improvement of the People's Living Standards

Kim Jong Il was deeply concerned to improve the people's living all the time and made great efforts for the purpose.

Ri Song Hyok, Chief Engineer of the Pyongyang Wheat Flour Processing Factory, said that on January 23, 2010, Kim Jong Il visited the factory despite the midwinter cold, and continued:

"During his visit to our factory that day, the great leader Kim Jong Il dropped in at the Cake Workshop on the third floor.

When the elevator could not be operated because of unexpected circumstances, he went up the stairs with steep incline, saying he would walk up.

Entering the production site, he carefully saw the cakes on the assembly line and took up one of them to taste it.

That day, he earnestly told us to put the production processes of the factory on a modern and scientific footing at the shortest time and ensure the hygienic security of the products."

Kim Jong Il regarded his hardship as a pleasure in order to provide the people and children with a greater number of delicious and highly nutritious foodstuffs of various kinds.

He left his traces of great efforts in all parts of the country to solve the food, clothing and housing problems of the people.

Pidan Island on the West Sea of Korea tells the tireless efforts of Kim Jong Il who visited the island in spite of rain and wind and taught the ways for normalizing the reed production to solve the clothing problem of the people and improve the living of the local people.

The workers of the February 8 Vinalon Complex remember the benevolent Kim Jong Il who visited the complex despite the sultry weather in midsummer. At that time, he looked round the production sites to indicate specific practical ways to rebuild the complex on a modern basis. When he called at the complex again which had been remodelled in a short period, he was greatly satisfied to see a lot of vinalon.

His efforts can be also felt at a fishery base on the east coast of Korea. Kim Jong Il had an enterprise equipped with modern facilities built in order to provide the people with fresh fish in all seasons. When he visited it, he entered even a cold storage and gave instructions on mechanizing the transportation of the products.

Walking the rugged paddy lanes, he stressed the need to do better farming. Walking in the compound of a chicken farm exposed to severe blizzards, he taught how to breed chicken in a scientific way. And he worked heart and soul to supply the Pyongyang citizens with fish at the last time of his life.

Kim Jong Il always thought of the people and devoted all his life to the improvement of their living standards in his lifetime.
