On December 12, 1948, the great leader Comrade Kim Il Sung visited the shooting range in the then Phyongchon plain in Pyongyang after being told that a test-fire of the first homemade submachine guns was to be held.
Holding a submachine gun off the armrack in the range, he said that the gun was very well made and today we would show off the strength of the resourceful Korean people to the whole world, adding that the weapon was imbued with the talent and indomitable revolutionary spirit of the resourceful and courageous Koreans and the red blood of the anti-Japanese revolutionary forerunners.
He said that he would like to try firing the weapon made by the Korean working class and conducted a test-fire.
After the test-fire, he said running his hand along the gun: How many people shed blood to obtain a single rifle when we fought the anti-Japanese armed struggle? Now we are able to manufacture weapons by ourselves like this. How wonderful it is! What matters is the determination to do everything by ourselves.
At the time those who worshipped great powers and considered technology something beyond ordinary understanding said that the country could not manufacture a submachine gun because it had no history of armaments industry and lacked technology and that in case of manufacturing it, it would be needed to assemble with imported materials and parts. But the Korean working class managed to make the first submachine gun, foiling their obstructive moves.
Comrade Kim Il Sung said that it can be called a historic event that we have become able to make weapons by ourselves and today is a defining day when we demonstrate before the whole world the establishment of the Juche-oriented armaments industry.
He added: Now that we have made a prototype of the weapon, we can start the production in real earnest. We should mass-produce them to arm both the People’s Army and the entire population so that they could turn out with arms against the enemy if they provoke us.
Starting like this, the defence industry of the DPRK is now powerful enough to manufacture any kind of armaments at will.
