The Mausoleum of King Tongmyong, the founder king of Koguryo (277 BC-AD 668) which was the first feudal state in the history of the Korean nation, is situated in Ryokpho District, Pyongyang.
It was renovated in May 1993 under the wise leadership of President Kim Il Sung and Chairman Kim Jong Il .
There is a pine forest of nearly 40 hectares on the hill around it.
The forest, hundreds of years old, was created particularly for the mausoleum.
The pine trees add more to the picturesque scenery of the mausoleum.
The Mausoleum of King Tongmyong district, including the pine forest, covers 170 hectares.
The mausoleum, a stone-chambered earth tomb, faces the south.
The lower part of the mausoleum, which is 11.5m high, is a square-shaped plinth of stones, each side of which is 34m long.
The interior of the tomb is composed of inner chamber, front compartment and grave passage, and lotus flowers are painted on the walls and ceiling of the inner chamber.
In front of the tomb are a stone altar and stone lantern and on both sides of the tomb are stone posts, stone tigers and stone incense burners.
Stone statues of civilian and military officers, who contributed to the founding and development of Koguryo, stand on both sides.
The Jongnung Temple from the Koguryo period, unearthed in the course of discovering the relics around the mausoleum, is situated 120m south of the mausoleum.
The mausoleum was inscribed on the world heritage list in 2004.
Associated with the long history and culture of the nation, it is under protection.
