Interest in fish farming in paddy fields is unprecedentedly growing across the DPRK.
The Samjigang Farm in Jaeryong County, South Hwanghae Province, which was selected as one of 30 best farms in 2024, has recently made good progress in the paddy-field fish farming.
According to a calculation based on the crop condition and the increasing weight of the fishes in the paddy fields where fishes are intensively raised, the farm is expected to produce more than 10 tons of rice and 60 tons of fishes per hectare.
Given that ordinary paddy fields require manuring 3 to 5 times, spraying of agrochemicals more than twice and weeding 3 or 4 times a year, the paddy fields where fishes are raised do not need to be manured, sprayed with agrochemicals and weeded as the fishes rummage the soil and their excrement enhances soil fertility, making crops grow healthy. Besides, the microorganisms in the paddy fields are used as natural fodder, say its farmers.
The farm established a cyclic production system under which they release loaches and mud snails in the paddy field next to where catfish are growing so that the mud snails live on the weeds growing in the fields and their excrement is eaten by the loaches which in turn are used to supplement the protein fodder of the catfish.
Several districts and counties of Pyongyang and Nampho municipalities and South Hwanghae Province take effective measures to provide fodder needed for paddy-field fish farming and at the same time push ahead with the projects to build catfish spawning ponds, large-capacity freezing warehouse and catfish processing facilities.
The Academy of Agricultural Science makes steady efforts to standardize the Korean-style fish farming in paddy fields so as to generalize it to the farms across the country.
