In Korean history there are many scientists and technicians who contributed to enriching the treasure house of human culture with scientific creations and inventions and authorship.
Among them is Kang Po who lived from the latter half of the 13th century to the first half of the 14th century.
Since his childhood, the mathematician in the period of Koryo (918-1392) drew the admiration of many people for his outstanding mathematical talent, scientific insight and tireless and energetic inquiry.
As he had deep knowledge in mathematics, astronomy and mechanics, he solved many different mathematical problems arising in those fields by his own method. In the course of this, he produced an ingenious calculating method of biquadratic equation with one unknown by developing evolution in mathematics.
He also developed several calculating methods including evolution and interpolation.
The book on the numeration table needed in many complex calculations based on the calendar, which he published in 1343 under the title of Susiryokchopbopripsong , is regarded as the oldest astronomical book ever known.
It contains theories and calculating methods on the solar and lunar movements, theories on five stars—Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn—and mathematical theory on multiplication and division.
It was compiled on the basis of the ingenious way of calculation developed by Kang Po who stood out in calendric calculation.
It is very important in studying the astronomical theories and the calculation methods in ancient and medieval Korea.
