“The lives of the patients are linked to every minute of nursing,” said Choe Myong, chief nurse of Gynaecology Department No. 1 at Pyongyang Maternity Hospital.
When she was appointed to the hospital after her demob in December 2007, she was more afraid than had confidence.
It happened when she was on her first night duty as a nurse at the Baby Department. While observing the newborns’ conditions, she found something was wrong with a premature baby. She was at a loss for a while to deal with the baby’s symptom of sudden respiratory insufficiency, Choe said. An experienced colleague came into her aid and the baby’s condition improved, but she was heavy-hearted.
That day Choe looked anew into the nurse’s diary in which details of health conditions of each newborn, such as breathing, pulse, blood pressure and body temperature, were recorded hour by hour.
Can this be enough to fulfil my duty? She thought.
She looked back upon her military service when she nursed injured soldiers and even transfused her blood into them.
With this as a momentum, she realized once again that it was essential for nursing to possess a high level of skills before the sense of duty and dedicate selfless sincerity to the treatment.
She began to make efforts to raise her technical knowledge and skills including injection and studied hard under the study-while-you-work system.
In the course of this, she grew into a model nurse and experienced chief nurse who is able to offer medical care independently.
She has also presented valuable inventions such as an illuminated blood grouping device which was highly appreciated at the national sci-tech achievements of public health sector-2024.
Asked what made her keep her job though she was qualified for doctor, Choe Myong said “I love my nursing job.”
