Ho Ransolhon is well received these days.
The historical novel chronicles the life of Ho Ransolhon, a beautiful and gifted woman poet in the 16th century, as well as the contemporary social events. The book is so riveting it makes the reader enjoy every minute of it.
What comes as a surprise is that it was written by a woman with hearing impairment.
With much interest, we recently called at the author’s home in Neighbourhood Unit No. 70, Jigyong-dong, Rajin District, Rason.
We were greeted by Jong Mi Gyong, a beautiful woman, and her mother An Sun Gum.
“My daughter Mi Gyong turns 35 this year,” An Sun Gum said. “Unlike her two elder sisters, she enjoyed learning the mother tongue and reading books since her childhood. Still fresh in my memory is that at the age of four she, unlike her sisters who used to dance and sing for me, recited an impromptu poem to me, when I was back home from work.”
As she went to kindergarten, An continued, she improved her ability to write poem, and it was a source of great happiness for her family to see her reciting poems.
Unfortunately, however, a misfortune fell upon Mi Gyong when she was six. An accident left the promising child prodigy with impaired hearing.
Under the benefits of the state policy, Mi Gyong could continue to study and pursue her literary dream. Some of her works were highly appreciated at national mass literary works prize contest several times.
She began to feel an ardent desire to repay the country for its benevolence.
But she was depressed at the thought of the impossibility of writing a poem and a novel through coverage of reality and first-hand experience.
Encouragement and help came from officials and writers of the Korea Economic and Cultural Exchange Company of Persons with Speaking and Visual Impairment and the Central Committee of the Writers Union of Korea, who recommended she write a book with a historical theme.
This motivated her to buckle down to writing the aforesaid historical novel.
Many people with no acquaintance with her rendered sincere assistance to her as if she was their own daughter or sister, making calls to inform her of their tips.
“The heroine of the book died at the age of 26 in those hard times. But my daughter has been able to produce a good work and live a worthwhile life under such warm care and affection. How could it be thinkable but for our socialist society? Mi Gyong is now working on another historical work,” said An Sun Gum.
