Amid a new era of rural development being ushered in, the Raha Fruit Farm in Pukchong County, South Hamgyong Province, has gained fame with ssirum (Korean wrestling).
The farm is well-known across the country for good fruit farming. Now it has another source of pride.
At the 12th national folk sports contest of agricultural workers held in Pyongyang from August 20 to 23, the South Hamgyong provincial team comprised of the players from the farm entered the top rankings in the ssirum team event against the expectations of the jury and the contestants.
Kim Sok Sik, manager of the farm, attributed the success to mass-based sports activities.
In the past, the farm organized ssirum and other folk games on holidays.
But their approach began to be changed as mass-based sports activities gathered momentum in different parts of the country and, moreover, an increasing number of farms took part in the inter-provincial games and the folk sports contests of agricultural workers.
They paid particular attention to folk sports, which had effect on the atmosphere of the farm. During breaks, farmers played ssirum to bring delight to the workplace and even those who were negative about it, saying there was no time for it in the busy farming season, turned to cheer the players.
According to the manager, the festive mood filled the farm when ssirum matches took place between workteams.
While sports became part and parcel of their life, the farmers uncompromisingly won every ssirum competition in the county and came to find themselves in the national folk sports contest, bringing honour to both the farm and the province.
Now they say that ssirum is another source of their pride and they will surely win the next national tournament.
