The birthplace of President Kim Il Sung is situated in Mangyongdae District of Pyongyang, the capital of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
One early spring day in 1912 an old man in white overcoat and with a long grey beard arrived at Mangyongdae. He was travelling across the country in search of the place with the prime natural beauty.
That day he set out on the trip early in the morning and wanted to have a rest after a long journey. At the entrance to the village he found a group of women around a spring site at the foot of a mountain. They were there to fetch water for preparing breakfast. He asked for a drink of water.
The old man drank a gourd of water and then exclaimed that it tasted really good. Then he lifted his head to look about before he was left spellbound with his eyes glued to a hill nearby.
It was spring season when all things were coming back to life and all kinds of flowers were blooming. The hill was as beautiful as a picture.
Captivated by the lovely scenery, he went up the hill. From there he could see everything around: the clear and blue water of the Taedong River flowing under the cliff; two islands nearby and a vast field stretching afar.
The old man said to the village women: Throughout my life I have travelled almost every part of the country but this is the first place where water, wind, landform, trees and grass blend in well with each other and which commands a bird’s eye view of the surroundings.
Repeatedly stroking down his beard, he said loudly that Mangyongdae was the place where a great man would be surely born.
His prediction spread across the village instantly.
On April 15 that year Comrade Kim Il Sung was born at a straw-thatched house at the foot of Mangyong Hill.
