March 21 is International Day of Forests.
The UN General Assembly held in 2012 designated March 21 as International Day of Forests with the purpose of raising public awareness of the importance and role of forests.
Eighty percent of terrestrial biodiversity is that of forests.
Forests help enhance agricultural productivity and protect river basins.
According to data available, about 1.6 billion people in the world get food, fibre, water, medicine and others from forests.
Forests play an important role in mitigating climate change. They enable people to live in good health in safe ecological environment as they prevent environmental pollution and all kinds of noise and offer clean living environment.
However, they are being destroyed by human activities and various other factors.
Regional, national and international activities are under way to protect forests on the occasion of International Day of Forests.
The theme for this year’s IDF is "Forests and Economy".
The DPRK, where mountains account for a large proportion of its territory, regards afforestation and management of forests as important issues in economic construction and puts great efforts into them.
Large areas of forests have been created across the country through the forest restoration campaign over the past 10-odd years.
Modern tree nurseries and sapling production bases in all provinces, including the Central Tree Nursery, have produced and supplied enough saplings needed for forest restoration and the scientific level of tree planting has been improved to boost the rooting rate of planted trees.
Forest resources are making a positive contribution to economic development and the improvement of the people's living standard as the forest restoration has become the project of turning all mountains of the country into “gold and treasure mountains”, rather than that of merely planting mountains with trees.
In particular, thanks to the implementation of the regional development policy of the Workers’ Party of Korea, modern regional-industry factories have been built in cities and counties in recent years, accompanied by more active creation of forests of economic value to obtain raw materials for the factories.
