Pyongyang, February 3 (KCNA) — There is kite-flying among the DPRK’s intangible cultural heritage.
Kite-flying is one of the folk games of children. They play with kites using the power of wind.
From olden times, kite-flying in our country began in late autumn and ended when the cold diminishes next year. It usually reached its peak from the beginning of January to the January 15th of the lunar calendar.
This period was called the kite-flying season.
“Yon” in Korean (kite) originated from a high-flying kite (hawk).
Kite-flying has long been popular across the country.
According to historical records, a scarecrow set alight was flied high with a kite in battles, which shows that the nation’s kite-making and kite-flying technologies were very high at that time.
There were various kinds of kites at that time.
Among them the square- and ray-shaped kites are still flied now.
The size of kite is different according to local customs and wind strength.
For the key role played by the center hole, string and tie string in kite, they were called the three major elements in manufacturing and flying kites.
Kite game was played by high-flying, skill-showing, etc.
