Ryu Kum Hui is one of the talented film artistes.
Born in Hamhung City, South Hamgyong Province, she was gifted with a clear voice and correct pronunciation.
That is why she used to be a presenter at art performances during her school days and played the leading role in a children’s opera to win a best actress award.
After finishing middle school, she enrolled at Pyongyang University of Dramatic and Cinematic Arts according to her hope and after graduation she became a voice actress at the Korean Film Studio.
Working as a voice actress for nearly 40 years, she has excellently rendered words in thousands of films and TV series.
Ryu came to be widely known among the people for her beautiful voice and characteristic and fluent speaking and grew up to be a People’s Artiste.
She also amply displayed her talent as she acted in a TV series for the first time.
Her debut TV series "New Spring on the Paekhak Plain" was a success as it created a sensation among viewers as soon as it was released last year.
She was near to 70 when she took part in its production.
But she spent most of her time at filming locations to portray a true farmer. She often met and talked with old people in the rural villages to make her own their accents, ways of speaking, facial expressions, bearings, gaits and many other details. Those who were involved in the production with her at that time deeply admired her serious attitude of creation and sincerity, they said.
In the work, Ryu impressively played the part of the grandmother of a troublesome young man.
Her friends and many other people heartily congratulated her on her success.
“My career shows that I have been able to succeed both behind and on the screen thanks to the fertile soil. That soil is my unforgettable teachers who found out and developed my talent, those who cared for me and our system that put me forward,” said Ryu.
She is still working hard to train artistes at Pyongyang University of Dramatic and Cinematic Arts, full of energy despite her advanced age.
