Changgwang Restaurants in the heart of the capital city of Pyongyang embrace the Unhasu Restaurant, Rungna Restaurant, Changgwang Restaurant, Yaksan Restaurant and other eateries.
The restaurants have excelled at several annual national cooking contests and festivals by presenting peculiar dishes with high nutritive values. They won the team prize in the Wonsan Kalma Cooking Festival in September 2025 especially for their fried catfish with fruit sauce, mung-bean jelly salad and fried lobster.
Many people are frequenting the Unhasu Restaurant to savour a live fish dish–a fast fried dish made of sliced fish meat coated with a mixture of flour and whipped eggs.
Among the excellent cuisine is also the elegant and delicious ostrich dish of the Yaksan Restaurant.
Choe Ok Nim, a cook of the restaurant, has been awarded best prizes and gold medals in national culinary skill contests and other events by inventing new ostrich dishes that preserve the nutritional and processing characteristics of the meat and make a good combination of a variety of supplementary materials.
Growing in popularity are the Changgwang Restaurant’s Pyongyang cold noodles, top-ranked in terms of the thickness and tenacity of the noodles and the flavour of the meat stock, pork stew, dumpling stew and mutton stew, the Sungni Restaurant’s stew and the Unhasu Restaurant’s unique wheat tea processed in a traditional way.
“We’ll contribute to enriching the dietary life of the people by developing more delights in line with the global culinary trend,” says Ri Hyon Ok, manageress of the restaurants.
